Hier und Dort-Leiste

A documentary by Irene Langemann (Running time: 30 minutes)

For his entire life, Georgian Giwi Margwelaschwili has been crossing borders between countries, cultures and languages. His story, on the one hand largely determined by the political upheavals in Eastern Europe and Nazi Germany, underwent, on the other, a completely individual and unusual development. Born in Berlin to Georgian emigrants, Giwi grew up in the German language. At the end of the war, he was arrested by the Soviet NKWD security forces and was interred in the former Sachsenhausen concentration camp. In 1946 he was deported to Georgia. Unable to speak - Giwi Margwelaschwili spoke hardly any Russian and no Georgian - writing became his way to survive. His tragic life made an impact: When Giwi Margwelaschwili returned to Berlin after the fall of the wall in 1989, he had several book manuscripts in his luggage. The film tells the story of Giwi Margwelaschwili's life and his literature.
