He was an exceptional figure on the Soviet music scene. Of German descent, he was deported to the Kazakh steppe in 1941 and could only practise on a keyboard painted on a table. This did not stop his talent, and he later played as well as Svyatoslav Richter, but only in the Soviet Union.
